教職員成就

Since taking on his role as Associate Professor in 2018, Dr. Kwok Wai Luen has proven himself as a solid asset to the Department of Religion and Philosophy. Under his stewardship, the Department has soared to new heights in line with the HKBU’s strategic direction. Through his active involvement in public service, he has also contributed to the greater good of society.

Dr. Kwok’s influence on HKBU is clearly demonstrated by his service on over 15 university level committees, overseeing the development of academic matters, quality assurance, teaching and learning policy, students affairs, among others.

He has been proactive in programme development to suit student needs, having championed the revamp of the religious studies major to its current, interdisciplinary form as B.A. (Hon) Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE). He has also successfully introduced the Diploma in Education (2 + 3) option for RPE in 2020/21.

As Head of Department, Dr. Kwok led the rebranding initiatives by redesigning publicity materials and harnessing the power of social media platforms. In observing the need for an ethical framework in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT, Dr. Kwok motived the Department to lead the discussion in this matter by organising the International Conference on AI Ethics in March 2023.

In his public service, Dr. Kwok launched the Cultivating Peace project with the St. James Settlement, HKBU’s Government and International Studies (GIS) and Social Work (SOWK) programmes as well as several secondary schools. Aiming to promote reconciliation within Hong Kong following a time of social unrest, local activities have engaged with over 40,000 members of the public. Cultivating Peace is preparing for collaboration with the Korean Peace Institute and Duke University Northeast Asia Reconciliation Initiative, putting HKBU on the international map for its contributions to peace studies. Other local contributions include his long term involvement in the Fullness Social Enterprises Society for promoting Christian social enterprises.

Dr. Kwok has also lent his expertise to reputable overseas institutes, having served as visiting scholar at the King’s College London, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Oxford, and the Eberhard Karl University of Tübingen. He has been invited for keynote speeches, presentations and interviews by the Society for the Study of Christian Ethics, Taiwan Graduate School of Theology, Shandong University, University of Zurich, Yale University, and Christianity Today, a prestigious magazines for US Christian churches.

He is currently a council member of the Northeast Asia Reconciliation Initiative, a board member of the Christian Study Centre on Chinese Religion and Culture, and a member of the Curriculum Development Committee at the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority. In addition, he is also a valued member of the Theological and Current Affairs Committee of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church Union of Hong Kong. He served as the President of the Society for the Study of the History of Christianity in China.

With a consistent show of dedication and commitment to making the world a better place, Dr. Kwok has undoubtedly earned his place as the recipient of the President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Service.
