  • Abstract: Christianity has a long and complex history with imperialism and racism. In the British empire, Christianity was tightly fused with British colonisation. Christianity played a crucial role in giving divine sanction to British imperialism – divinised imperialism. This lecture examines divinised imperialism in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the role of residential mission schools in supporting and endorsing the British imperial invasion of Māori people and land. The land wars defined New Zealand history, and their injustices continue to define New Zealand religious, social, and political life.
