"What young people possess is time and opportunity. Students should equip themselves continuously for achieving their dream. I believe success is not related to one’s educational background, while studying Arts is not a barrier of one’s future development. What really matters is one’s effort and attitude in the long run."
Mr. CHING Wai Kuen John
BA (Hons) 2005
Liberal Studies Teacher, HKMA David Li Kwok Po College
"Religion and philosophy are indispensable to humans. Therefore, studying religion and philosophy is not only the knowledge of the disciplines, but also a model of thinking and a framework of understanding the world. It is still useful for working after graduation. "
Dr. ZHAO Wenqing

"Beside rich academic resources, the Department is committed to students’ whole-person development. They organize study tours to Europe and Mainland China, as well as visit of local religious communities. Students can have the chance to experience religious ceremonies and interact with social institutions. These activities enrich my knowledge and understanding in religion and culture, on the one hand deepening local observation and on the other hand broadening global horizons. "
Mr. CHAN Hung Ming
BA (Hons) 2017
"The relationship between professors and students of our department can be as close as friends. “Eating” is a special feature of the department. Our professors teach seriously, eat seriously and play seriously. They frequently invite students to eat together, discussing religions and philosophy on the table, or simply chit-chating."
The Department of Religion and Philosophy organized the 30th Anniversary Dinner on 16th November 2018 in celebration of the establishment of its first bachelor programme. Nearly 300 teachers, students, alumni and friends participated and refreshed their fond memories of studying and working at the Department.
Prof. Carver Yu, programme founder of the Department, and Prof. Mette Hjort, Dean of Arts, officiated the dinner. Several former teachers attended, and Prof. Gerhold Becker, former Head of Department, and Rev. Dr. Ip King-tak, former Chaplain, even made a special trip to Hong Kong to join. Scholarships were presented to outstanding undergraduates and MA students, whereas alumni association was announced to be established. Lucky draw, as well as singing, piano and magic performance and sharing by student, teachers and alumni of different generations made it a joy and warm evening. The anniversary dinner was drawn to an end with the sing-a-long led by former and current teachers.

The Department of Religion and Philosophy is dedicated throughout the past decades to nurturing undergraduate and postgraduate students for their whole-person development. As the only department in Hong Kong which combines religion with philosophy, we continue to strive for excellence in teaching and research in the interdisciplinary studies of religion and philosophy. According to QS University Subject Rankings 2019, for Theology, Divinity and Religion our ranking is #51-100 and for Philosophy our ranking is #101-150.
As our new B.A. (Honours) in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics Programme will change to a hybrid mode of admission (i.e. students will be admitted from programme-based admission or from broad-based admission), student scholarships and bursary schemes will be much needed to attract admission of high caliber secondary school graduates. We welcome your support towards the REL Student Development Fund for the benefit of the fellow students. The Fund will be used to establish student scholarships, provide bursary schemes for needy students, subsidize study tours organized by the Department and support student activities etc.
Your valuable donations to support the development of the Department and our students are most appreciated. Please download and complete the below donation form to make a difference in educating future generations. Recently the whole concept of the function of higher education has changed. The significant role of higher education is the training of analytical and critical thinking, creativity and flexibility, and a broad base of knowledge. Employers in Hong Kong are looking for these qualities rather than hard skills in a very narrow scope which may become obsolete in few years. Nowadays, graduate with good training in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics can go into a wide variety of fields for career development. According to the employment survey conducted by the Office of Student Affairs, the mean monthly salary of our 2022 graduates is HK$18,624, ranking the forth among all programmes offered by the Faculty of Arts.
